Is there a start-up cost?

No. There is no start-up cost to become a Landstar agent.

How long does it take to start earning money?

Make money when you move your first load, even if it’s your first day of business as a Landstar agent. Billed loads are settled weekly.

What is the payment structure?

On each delivered load, the agent who arranged the load, the capacity provider engaged by the agent to transport the load and Landstar each receive a portion of the revenue. Payments to the agent are based on the percentage commission rates set forth in the agency agreement between the agent and Landstar. Landstar’s portion of the revenue covers costs associated with many support functions and services that are value-additive to the agent.

What back-office support does Landstar offer?

We believe that no other agent-based company provides the access to capacity and level of support that Landstar provides its independent agents. For example, Landstar’s pricing and customer contracts departments assist in bids and RFPs, plus, we provide customer invoicing and accounts receivable services. Weekly settlements give you the cash flow to run your business, and establish credit with your customers to minimize risk.

Am I limited to a geographical location?

No. Unlike many sales agents, Landstar agents aren’t limited to territories, industries or specific modes.

How long does it take to become a freight agent?

The decision to open your own business is not one to rush into. We have a proven process for business planning and onboarding so you are set up for success from the very beginning. The timeline will vary for each applicant, but the process is designed to take a month or more.

Can I hire agency staff?

You have the freedom to grow your business as large as you like and hire staff that supports your business. There are no limits to what you can earn or how large to grow your agency. With no territory restrictions, you can have satellite offices across North America.

What ongoing business assistance is offered?

An Area Sales Manager is dedicated to helping you succeed throughout your tenure, from assisting with sales calls to connecting you to the Landstar resources you need. For each transportation mode, we have a team with decades of experience and expertise to help you grow your agency’s offerings. We also have programs like Grow Your Star to provide guidance, motivation, and business building opportunities.
