How Steve Wheeler Had No Choice But to Win

In a September Zoom conference call, Landstar President and CEO Jim Gattoni explained how the four business capacity owner (BCO) finalists in the 2020 Deliver To Win Truck Giveaway would select a box for the chance to win a new Freightliner® Cascadia® 126. “When I call your name, in alphabetical order by first name, select the letter of the box that you believe wins the truck, unless you are Steve who will be left with the last box.”

Landstar BCO Steve Wheeler, who was at the end of the alphabet, watched with anticipation as the first three finalists selected their boxes when prompted during the virtual event.

“At that point all the nervousness was gone. I was suddenly very calm because I didn’t have to choose,” recalls Steve Wheeler. “I had a peace about me, because whatever was going to happen was going to be decided for me.”

The finalists selected boxes C, B, then box D, leaving Wheeler with box A. When Gattoni called for boxes to be lifted, Wheeler says he couldn’t believe his eyes - he won!

“Everybody else just cleared every box out of my way. I would have hated to have to choose,” says Wheeler. “It is unbelievable, I am just overwhelmed, thankful, and I am glad it came to me.”

About the Winner

Wheeler, who lives in Greenville, North Carolina with his wife Chris, spent 30 years as a professional company driver before leasing to Landstar as an independent owner-operator in 2014. In October 2020, nearly a month after the drawing, the Wheelers traveled to Landstar headquarters in Jacksonville, Florida to pick up Wheeler’s new truck. When they arrived, the couple was greeted by Landstar President and CEO Jim Gattoni, who in true 2020 fashion, remained at a safe social distance to toss Wheeler the keys to his new truck.

“Wow. It’s more beautiful than I thought it would be,” said Wheeler when he saw his new Freightliner® Cascadia® 126 in person for the first time. “It’s set up for fuel economy too!”

About the 2020 Deliver to Win Truck Giveaway

The 2020 Deliver to Win Truck Giveaway marked Landstar’s second truck giveaway held as a virtual event via Zoom video conferencing this year. Every year, all eligible owner-operators leased to Landstar automatically earn entries in the Deliver to Win Truck Giveaway by safely delivering loads during the set giveaway period.

Throughout the year, Landstar owner-operators also have multiple opportunities to earn additional entries to increase their chances at winning the truck, including monthly challenges held via DeliverToWin.com. After the giveaway period ends, entries are gathered into a pool of names for the finalists drawing, with all eligible truck giveaway finalists selected by a computerized random number generator.
